Our Founder’s Story
In 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. During treatment, I lost all my hair, and with it a part of my identity. But when my hair grew back, I made a promise to myself: to choose better, to protect my scalp, to honour my roots, and to braid with purpose.
That promise led me to create The Canerow Company, a UK-based brand offering plant-based braiding hair made from banana fibre. We think of it Like Plantain for Hair!™
At The Canerow Company we are not braiding hair, we are braiding a movement. We help you make “good hair” your forever standard.

Why 'Canerow'?
As a British-born woman of Jamaican descent, I grew up hearing the word “Canerow” from my family. It’s what we called the beautiful, intricate braid patterns many now call “Cornrows.” The term reflects more than just a hairstyle – it reflects a heritage.
Canerows date back thousands of years in Africa, used often to communicate and tell tribal stories, also used to map escape routes during slavery, and to signify ranking as well as beauty, strength, and resistance. This name connects my modern mission with ancestral wisdom.
Why Banana Fibre?
Banana fibre that we use is from a replenished resource that was headed for landfill. There are various benefits of using this fibre for our hair extensions which are as follows:
